St. Maximillian Kolbe

Volunteer Yvonne Hennigan has had an interest in the lives of the Saints since she was a young child. She has traveled to St. Damian of Molokai’s Leper colony in Hawaii and many places in Europe learning about various Saints. To the delight of many, she recently presented on the life of one Saint in particular—St. Maximillian Kolbe, in the auditorium. She gave the history of his early life, his dedication to the Blessed Mother and founding of monasteries in his native Poland and Japan, and his final act of charity when he gave his life in place of another prisoner in Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. She then explained the timeline leading to his eventual canonization in 1982. At the end of the presentation a special guest, a 10-year-old boy named Jacob from Yvonne’s parish, dressed up in a replica prisoner outfit from Auschwitz which included wooden shoes. It was an enlightening afternoon for all.
