Association Jeanne Jugan
The Association Jeanne Jugan is an extension of the Little Sisters’ hands and hearts.
The Association Jeanne Jugan offers Catholic men and women aged 18 years or older the opportunity of sharing in the spirituality of the Little Sisters of the Poor, by participating in their mission of hospitality, and helping to spread the charism of Saint Jeanne Jugan where they live and work.
Members are retirees, professionals, stay-at-home moms, staff members, and faithful volunteers who wish to share in the spirituality of the Congregation and to participate in the Sisters’ mission of hospitality to the needy elderly.
Established by the Vatican in 1998, there are now over 2,000 members worldwide who participate in the Sisters’ apostolate in many ways, each one according to his or her talents, interests and family/professional obligations.
After a year of spiritual preparation, new members are inducted into the Association Jeanne Jugan on May 1st, the feast of St. Joseph the worker, patron of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
A.J.J. activities include:
- Serving as lectors and Eucharistic ministers
- Visiting Residents who are hospitalized, room-bound or in need of special attention
- Helping with the meal service
- Assuring a comforting presence with the dying Residents
- Helping with fund raising activities
- Helping the Activities Department with events
If you are interested in joining the Association Jeanne Jugan, email Valerie Beam, our volunteer coordinator at volpittsburgh@littlesistersofthepoor.org or call (412) 307-1139.
Lend a Helping Hand and Volunteer
Volunteering is an excellent way to share your time and talents, and in return, to experience happiness as you brighten someone’s day.
Believing in the value of the lives of the elderly, the Little Sisters of the Poor strive to make their Residents as happy as possible. You, too, can discover the wisdom and beauty of the elderly through the many volunteer opportunities which exist at our home.
By volunteering regularly or for special events, you will experience happiness yourself as you offer the Residents companionship and joy!
Our volunteers escort Residents to and from activities or physical therapy, assist them on shopping trips and other outings, volunteer in the kitchen, country store, Resident computer room, & the “Little Shop of Plenty,” our in-house thrift shop, organize our rummage and craft/ceramics sales, and help in the administrative offices.
There are many volunteer opportunities available at the Little Sisters of the Poor:
- Visiting with Residents
- Assisting with activities, crafts, exercise & music programs
- Assisting with serving Residents’ meals
- Escort and transport Residents to their medical appointments
We encourage groups from churches, schools or offices to sponsor an activity such as bingo or adopt our Residents during the holidays like Present for Patients.
Your group can also help by collecting items needed to help care for the elderly and run the home! Contact us for collection ideas.
If you are interested in the volunteer opportunities at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Valerie Beam 412-307-1139 or volpittsburgh@littlesistersofthepoor.org to get information, an application, a tour of our home, or to begin the registration process.
Youth Service Program
Are you a high school or college student looking for a way to make a difference in the world, for some place to volunteer your time and talents? Or, are you a youth minister looking for a worthwhile service site for your group? You’ve come to the right place!
Young people bring a great deal of joy to the elderly. The two generations understand each other very well. Our Home is blessed with young volunteers who come from local high schools and colleges, sometimes as part of their education work. Often, they develop bonds with the Residents and want to keep coming after their course work.
Youth service options at our Home include:
- Mass with the Residents and Little Sisters – every day at 11 a.m.
- Helping to serve meals to the Residents
- Providing music and entertainment – our Residents always enjoy performances by school groups!
- Volunteering for a day of service at the Home.
- School class or youth group could sponsor an event – a bingo party or another special activity
If you or your youth group would like to get to know the wisdom and understanding of our elderly Residents, contact our Volunteer Coordinator Valerie Beam at volpittsburgh@littlesistersofthepoor.org (412)307-1139.
